A double garage has more total space, but the central gap often has to serve both cars. Plan it with both vehicles parked, then test each driver's route independently. Storage that works with one bay empty can be awkward when the household is home.
| Area | Possible use | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Outer walls | Shallow shelving or wall storage | Loaded depth beside each car |
| Rear wall | Cabinets or workbench | Boot opening and standing room |
| Space between bays | Shared walking route | Door swings from both vehicles |
| Near an entrance | Daily bikes and bags | Independent access with both cars in |
| One occasional-use bay | Mobile workspace | A clear home for equipment when the car returns |
Draw the cars you actually own
Record each vehicle's length and parked width, including mirrors as used. They may need different door-opening space. A smaller car does not necessarily need less room for a passenger who uses a mobility aid or for handling a child seat.
Include columns, door tracks and the route to the house door. If you have two separate garage doors, note their openings and any central pier rather than drawing one uninterrupted entrance.
Allocate access before shelves
Decide which way each car faces and where people get out. Try the proposed parking positions in the real garage. Check what happens when one person opens a door while another walks through the shared gap.
A simple width budget can expose an overfilled plan: internal width minus both car widths minus the proposed side storage leaves the total space for the remaining gaps. It does not divide that space automatically or prove the door swings fit.
Our layout planner models one vehicle footprint at a time. Use it to examine each bay conservatively, then check the combined arrangement on a measured sketch and in the garage. Do not interpret a single-car result as a verified two-car layout.
Give shared equipment one home
Put regularly used bikes, tools and bags somewhere accessible with both vehicles present. A rear-wall shelf can be spacious yet impractical if two boots block it. Keep boxes in a size you can carry through the available route without scraping either car.
For a workbench used only with a car outside, define the temporary working zone and where everything goes afterwards. A mobile cabinet is useful only if its parked position also fits the normal layout.
Install for the loads, then review the routine
Choose wall or freestanding systems according to the actual mounting conditions. Obtain the relevant manufacturer instructions and confirm any restraint requirements. An extra garage bay does not change what the wall can support.
After installation, try the plan on a normal busy day. Check shopping, passenger access and taking a bike out, rather than judging the arrangement from an empty-garage photograph. The garage organisation guide can help assign the remaining storage by frequency of use.
