Cabinets

Garage cabinets and workbenches that fit

Allow for handles, drawers, door swings and working space before choosing a cabinet run.

A cabinet can fit against the back wall and still be unusable with the car inside. Compare its closed footprint, fully open doors or drawers, and the space you need to stand in front of it. A workbench needs a working area as well as a worktop.

Dimension Why it matters
Overall depth Includes handles, worktop overhang and mounting clearance
Open depth Shows where a drawer or door will reach
Standing area Lets you use the contents without squeezing against the car
Height Must clear pipes, windows, beams and door hardware
Delivery size Determines whether the assembled unit can get into the garage

Start with what goes inside

Measure the largest tool cases and boxes. Check internal cabinet dimensions and the width of the opening, which can be smaller than the outside width. A shelf that is deep enough for a case is little help if the hinges prevent the case passing through the door.

For drawers, check the usable depth and height rather than dividing the cabinet's exterior dimensions by the number of drawers. Include space for the tools you expect to add, but avoid buying a deep run simply to fill the wall.

Mark both closed and open positions

Use removable tape for the cabinet footprint and a second line for open drawers or doors. Park the car normally. Can you open the drawer, stand squarely in front of it and lift out the heaviest item? Can the boot open if the units are on the rear wall?

Enter the closed footprint in the layout planner, then check the opening space physically. A simple rectangular plan does not model hinged doors or every drawer position.

Installation affects how cabinets work

Cabinets need the support, levelling, joining and restraint specified for that model. NewAge's support hub includes installation, levelling and planning guides. Do not transfer its instructions to a different cabinet range.

Confirm any wall-attachment requirement before ordering. A unit that stands on feet may still need restraint. Keep heavy contents where the maker permits them and follow instructions on drawer use; a tidy exterior does not remove tipping risks.

Choose a workbench you can approach

Decide whether you will work standing, seated or both. Allow for a vice, clamps and materials projecting beyond the top. Keep the normal work area clear of the car so a dropped tool or long workpiece does not turn routine work into a damage risk.

Mobile units can help when you work with the car outside, provided there is a clear route and a suitable parking position for the unit afterwards. For a narrow garage, a shorter bench and separate shallow tool storage may be easier to live with than a full matching cabinet set.
