A ceiling rack needs two separate approvals: enough space for the door, car and people beneath it, and a suitable structure to carry the installed load. A favourable clearance calculation answers only the first question, and only for the measurements entered.
| Measurement | Record |
|---|---|
| Ceiling height | Floor to ceiling at the proposed rack position |
| Rack drop | Ceiling to the lowest part of the installed rack |
| Door travel | Highest occupied point of the door and mechanism throughout movement |
| Car height | Including roof bars, aerials and any other relevant accessories |
| Your clearance margin | Extra gap you choose for this arrangement |
Check the moving door, not just the parked door
Keep people clear while observing the door's normal travel. Its panels, arm, opener rail or other hardware can occupy space that looks empty when the door is closed. Do not place a rack in the path of any component or obstruct maintenance access.
Measure at the proposed storage location. A measurement at the opposite end of the garage may miss a beam, light or track. If you cannot establish the full movement envelope safely, ask your door installer to check it.
Work through the height calculation
The underside height is ceiling height minus rack drop. Compare that result with the highest relevant obstruction, then subtract the clearance margin you have chosen.
For illustration, a 2,400 mm ceiling and 500 mm rack drop put the underside at 1,900 mm. If the relevant door or car envelope reaches 1,850 mm, only 50 mm remains before any extra margin. These are example measurements, not product specifications or a recommended gap.
The ceiling rack check performs this comparison. It cannot confirm the ceiling's load capacity, detect services or allow for objects hanging below the rack unless you include them in the measurements.
Identify what will carry the load
Read the exact rack's manual before deciding its position. The Garageflex FX7004 assembly instructions are one example of the product-specific documentation to obtain. Instructions for another model are not a substitute.
Ceiling lining alone is not evidence of a suitable fixing point. Do not assume that a visible timber member can take an added storage load, or drill into a roof structure without confirming its suitability. Where the structure is uncertain, get advice from a competent builder or structural professional.
Make retrieval part of the decision
Choose items you can lift and lower safely, and plan a stable access position with the car out of the way. A rack that requires balancing over a bonnet is in the wrong place. Keep the manufacturer's loading instructions with the rack, and revisit the plan whenever the vehicle, door or stored items change.
